The Union Township Planning Board has approved a six-story mixed-use building and public plaza at Centurion Union Center in downtown Union, New Jersey. Designed by MHS Architecture and developed by LANDMARK, the structure will yield 113 rental units. The project will also include 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, 143 structured parking spaces, and a landscaped 24,000-square-foot public plaza.

Setbacks above the fourth and fifth floors will create private outdoor terraces for upper-level residences. Per MHS Architecture, the design draws on the materials, colors, and fenestration of the earlier Centurion buildings while complementing the scale of the surrounding streetscape.

The plaza, designed with Melillo Bauer Carman Landscape Architecture, will be framed by the new building and a second mixed-use building currently under construction. Ground-floor shops and restaurants will open onto the plaza, with a 10-foot-wide strip designated for outdoor dining. A landscaped passageway will link the space to the public parking garage recently completed on the site.

The approval advances LANDMARK’s redevelopment of the Stuyvesant Avenue corridor. The nearest commuter rail service is NJ Transit’s Union station on the Raritan Valley Line, roughly 2 miles from the site near the Kean University campus, with trains to Newark Penn Station. Buses to Manhattan’s Port Authority Bus Terminal also depart from Morris Avenue.
