Last year, the owner of London’s growing Hoxton Hotel chain picked up a $17 million development site at 97 Wythe Avenue, between North 9th and 10th Streets in Williamsburg. Now, their architect has filed plans for the 96-foot building that will hopefully soon rise there.
Perkins Eastman will be designing the nine-story hotel, which will pack 175 rooms into 50,000 square feet of net commercial space (plus another 30,000 square feet that does not count towards zoning, though we’re not sure what exactly this will be, since the building has 23 open air parking spots but none in a garage).
The London-based Hotelier currently has outposts in Shoreditch in East London (which contains Silicon Roundabout, London’s tech district) and Holborn in a more central part of the city, and is also opening locations in Amsterdam and Paris.
The Hoxtel will join Willamsburg’s most famous hotel, the Morris Adjmi-designed Wythe, on North 11th. The McCarren Hotel & Pool, formerly the King & Grove, is also nearby, a block east of Wythe on North 12th. The hotels are encouraged by zoning that allows commercial and industrial uses, but no housing. Hotels are in short demand in New York City and Northside Williamsburg is crawling with tourists, making trendy lodgings a natural fit.
