It has been about three months since we checked in on the coming Robert A.M. Stern creation at 220 Central Park South. Progress has been made since then. Photos taken by our friend Tectonic show the tower portion of the building, which rests on West 58th Street, is several stories taller, approaching the 10-story mark on its way to 66 stories.
The 472,523-square-foot Vornado-developed project will eventually have 160 units in the 950-foot-tall tower and another 13 “villas” resting on Central Park South, though no structure has begun rising there.

The tower will have 414,349 square feet of residential space, which works out to units averaging a whopping nearly 2,590 square feet each. Current building permits show eight units each on the eighth through 10th floors, three units each on the 11th through 38th floors, and then two units each on the 39th through 64th floors.

The villas will number 13 and be full-floor from the third floor through the 15th floor. They will occupy 57,713 square feet. That works out to units averaging about 4,439 square feet each.
Amenities will include 35 automobile parking spaces, 84 bicycle parking spaces, a spin room, a weight room, a fitness room, a “treatment room,” a “children’s amenity area,” a library, and a second floor roof terrace in the tower. There are many other amenity rooms listed in the Schedule A, but without further detail. A tuned mass damper will be on the 66th floor.
Permits list 461 square feet of commercial space. That will be for retail on the first floor.
Completion is expected late this year.
While 950 feet is certainly significant and the building will mark yet another unmistakable Robert A.M. Stern presence along Central Park, it will be overshadowed by its neighbor across 58th Street – 217 West 57th Street. That supertall will rise to 1,550 feet, but isn’t slated for completion until 2019.
