A big hole in the ground on Manhattan’s East Side is nearly ready to be filled. Foundation work is almost done at 685 First Avenue, located between East 39th and East 40th streets in Murray Hill.

The eventual occupant of the site will be a 42-story, 550-unit mixed-use building, according to the latest records from the Department of Buildings. It will rise 459 feet. Sheldon Solow is the developer and Richard Meier & Partners Architects is behind the design, which was revealed in May.
The current building permit, issued just last Thursday, shows a proposed total of 715,012 square feet. 704,924 square feet of that will be for residential space. That works out to units averaging over 1,281 square feet. About two-thirds will be rentals and the remaining third will be condominiums, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The Schedule A lists 20 apartments each on floors three through 14, 16 apartments each on floors 15 through 20, 12 apartments each on floors 21 through 26, 14 apartments each on floors 27 and 28, and nine apartments each on floors 29 through 38. There will then be seven duplexes spanning the 39th and 40th floors, followed by another seven duplexes spanning the 41st and 42nd floors.
Listed amenities include laundry and storage for 282 bicycles in the sub-cellar and 110 automobile parking spaces in the cellar. The second floor will host a lap pool, fitness center, library, private recreational space, and private assembly space.
The permit lists 10,088 square feet or commercial space, and that will go two two retail spaces on the first floor.
The site is a little over half a mile from Grand Central Terminal. Completion is expected in 2018.
