Progress has been quick and steady at 1185 Broadway, aka 29 West 28th Street, the future NoMad site of the Ritz Carlton Hotel. Excavation finished in the beginning of January. Since then, the foundations and basement floors have been built to street level and the construction crane is up and running. The $500 million Midtown skyscraper is about to rise at the corner of Broadway and West 28th Street. Designed by Rafael Vinoly, developed by MarriottRitz Carlton Hotels, and Flag Luxury Properties, and with interior design by Yabu Pushelberg. The upcoming hotel will rise 40 stories tall and reach 580 feet above Midtown and the surrounding neighborhood.

YIMBY has recent photos of the site from the ground and above.

The construction crane is positioned along West 28th Street near the subway entrance to the 28th Street Broadway station. This will allow it to be attached to the flat southern elevation of the tower all the way to its pinnacle. The crane is also located in what will eventually be a public landscaped plaza that sits outside the main entrance to the hotel. Meanwhile, tons of rebar have been laid out and tied in place on the ground floor. They await the imminent concrete pours to form the slabs, exterior columns, and core walls of the hotel. Part of the first floor will have a double-height space at the southern corner of the property.

The Ritz Carlton will yield about 150,000 square feet and come with 250 guest rooms and 16 residential units. Amenities include a spa, a fitness center, bicycle parking, a public ground-floor restaurant with a bar, and a rooftop bar. Perhaps the most intriguing aesthetic of the hotel will be its overhanging shrubs and plants on almost every level.

1185 Broadway is expected to be completed sometime by late 2020 or early 2021.

  1. What did NYC do to deserve this building?

Nothing, simple Rafael Vinoly decide that Miami South Beach District building can be built in NYC Broadway District. Nothing wrong with this design if it would be stay in South Beach’ Collins Avenue, but it will be built just in the middle of Broadway District, still much better than trash inspired supertall middle finger at 432 Park.

  2. Slightly more ‘humane’ than Vinoly’s usual work, or maybe I’m being fooled by the ‘overhanging shrubs on each floor gimmick.

    • ..anyway you can stick anything on a rendering. Let’s see if those shrubs ever see the sunlight of day.

Why then not put a giant sequoia on the top, making it “supertall”??? Tree inspired Miami Beach South Beach District building in the middle of Broadway… What’s about tons of dirt waters dropping, needs scaffolding permanently installed then… And if you remove these shrubs then you got Best Brutalist example how to destroy existing skyline with odious structures like this, we have already “trash can” inspired supertall finger, now Rafael Vinoly decided to built this crap. At least build it in Queens or Downtown Brooklyn next to 570 Fulton, btw looks like simular design. Next Time RF will be designed “Big FU” in the middle of Times Square or across NY Plaza Hotel!!!

That lucky bastard who owns the Greek temple penthouse at the Baudouine Building will soon lose his northern view! I love that penthouse.

This is one dreadful looking building. I would have expected more from Ritz Carlton.

Don’t worry, they get free bonus first night after dirt infused water from these shrubs met them after exiting this building for morning jogging.

Flower District extension, Ritz Carlton Shrubbed… Dirt infused waters dropping to your clothing and smelling mold permanently. Rafael Vinoly own punishment for NYC, after this crap probably refused to built in Miami Beach. So, Rafael trashed this design in the middle of Broadway. Adding more floors. What this building missing is tall trees on the rooftop, visible from the ground!!!

  5. Looks amazing. Can’t wait for this to open.

  6. Hey Jack, you are a trash talker typical NEW YORK.BE THANKFUL FLAG DECIDE TO BUILD THERE.The design is great. Dam you people run off Amazon, everybody fleeing N.Y. for a better place to live.GET A DECENT MAYOR AND GOVERNOR. THEY ARE DESTROYING YOUR CITY.

    • Jack Liberman | March 24, 2019 at 4:03 am | Reply

You are wrong, I’m not trash talker, you must learn your grammar too, “dam”, is not an English “damn” is correct. Second Bill Blasio is not my major, I didn’t vote for demon rats at all, and never since 2008!!! Amazon was failed because AOC and local Van Brammer crap politicians, they are not mine, I didn’t vote for them. When Facebook post asked for review and opinion polling Amazon support, I support it as most NYorkers in poll does. So you are knocking very wrong door. AOC is trash Hispanic who should be booted along antisemite Ilhan Omar from US Congress floor!!! About this design, is not good, trees will be never happened, just because this is NYC lostores sell1300 miles north from Miami, the climate here different and gusty winds happening besides just few month of Hurricane season, all year around. So, these spaces for them are trash design from architects inspired by trash cans, or trash baskets, like Vessel in Hudson Yards is inspired by trash basket, if you look and try to find what it is resembled for. TRASH Basket. Nothing wrong with architecture of Mall and other HY buildings, except 55 HY, is 51 story monolith from 60s, that’s it, you found simular buildings around Park Avenue business district, downtown Manhattan, or Avenue of Americas, dozens of them. Architects must do better works, instead of placing plasticard of 1960s design in place what is claimed to be a very hot business spot in whole US East Coast. Also, about this hotel design, it’s better fill empty parking lots with something like this than leaving a hole in the ground, but this doesn’t mean that NYC during current long construction boom is deserved for such mediocre architecture what may be best suite Miami hot weather market than Atlantic Continental Weather in NE Coast. Also, just next door the new Virgin Hotel have better designed, and really is interesting addition in this long negleted part of Broadway, between Greelly Square and Madison Square, previously occupied by “gypsy” street vendors and rundown cheap stores, selling fake or even counterfeit goods, made in China, now finally slowly converting in Row of expensive hotel brands.

Ps, Amazon deal have a backlash now in Arlington Virginia and Seattle, Washington. So, both Washington “city” and State, “thanks” for local NIMBYism here.
I hope you moron understand at least English text, because what you wrote, proved that you don’t!!!

Everybody fleeing NYC, where is a proof??? NYC population is continuously growing up, from 7,8 mln in 2000 to 8,3 mln in 2010, to 8,7 mln now. Name me another 1 million pop city in North America or even in Western Hemisphere, who added such increase in %%%%%????

  7. FINALLY SOME STYLE AND CLASS.LOOKS GREAT.

Report a troll!!! Nothing say practically, no English grammar, all Caps!!!

      • Jack Liberman | March 24, 2019 at 4:35 am | Reply

Fuck I made mistake in my writing, just by reading up your crap. Use space between sentences and use punctuation sign and check your grammar. Agree everybody can make mistakes in writing, I do, I typing fast and with brainstorming, and often missing to check my grammar for correct words or commas, but you are “genius” making your post illiterate on 100%, all caps, you want to attract attention for yourself, are you a troll??? Say something in support of your opinion, you are not texting to your girlfriends, this is a Real Estate/Construction News site, Yes In My Backyard, and all post must have some proof or support, I guess. Not just trolling about falling Amazon deal, what even Bezos fail working to support fully. He believed in fake media poll post and sites, instead of waiting little bit and find that most NYorkers in poll are Supporting Amazon. Btw Related built Hudson Yards with tax relief provision too, anything is ok, if this will create permanent high paying middle class jobs!!!
Hudson Yards received 7 billion in tax incentives, already given back in taxes 10 billion to the city!!!
These politicians doesn’t understand how capitalist lobbyism works, that for attract some good investment we must give them tax incentives. And do you know why, because Recession is programmed into modern Capitalist Economy for every 8-10 years between. So a new Recession will be somewhere 2020-2021, no joke, you see. And have created some good paying jobs before New Recession coming is not bad idea at all!!!

    • Jack Liberman | March 24, 2019 at 4:40 am | Reply

Do you think in Abu Dhabi or in China local government didn’t gave potential investors some incentives to invest there and built there??? Do you think that all HSR are profitable and didn’t received government support and tax money??? All public transit are not profitable, but we must move somehow number of people, otherwise they clog our local streets and main highways with their cars!!!

  8. Gardening in the sky takes some skill. It is an unforgiving environment for most plants. I would wager that those trees end up dying and having to be repeatedly replanted a few times. Eventually the building will give up and go treeless.

    • Jack Liberman | March 24, 2019 at 4:13 am | Reply

Absolutely, they may be ok for Spiral 66 Hudson Yards Blvd by BIG, because of stepup terraces with each floor, but not straight up facade of this hotel design. This definitely will end up tree-less, spaces will be filled with windy outdoor activities, like cafes with outdoor terraces. Except being permanently windy, thanks for most aerodynamic effect of side street canyon of street greed here in NY, when winds came from Atlantic shores.
And often with 50-60 miles gusts. Enough to side down construction cranes and knock down many trees. Now we have trees flying down from 30-40 floor height. Just think about that!!!

  9. Jack your a nut oh yea ALL CAPS THAT’S SO YOU WILL READ DUMMY.
