New York-based Gene Kaufman’s design studio is responsible for more than 50 hotels and dozens of commercial properties across New York City. Together with Onboard Hospitality, LLC, Kaufman’s latest project is currently under construction at 36 West 38th Street in Midtown, Manhattan, and will debut as Jade Hotel.
Updated renderings for the 21-story hotel property reveal a simple grey-hued masonry façade, stacked balconies, and outdoor terrace areas. Little information has been revealed regarding additional amenity spaces nor the look and feel of the development’s interior spaces.
36 West 38th Street is not an entirely new development. The plot of land was originally owned by Gemini Real Estate Asset Management, who auctioned off the property as part of the firm’s bankruptcy proceedings. In January 2017, Joginder Sharma of Onboard Hospitality LLC became the new owner of the site for just over $19 million.
Falcon Pacific Builders, the construction managers for the new Jade Hotel, have confirmed that work on the rising property is expected to wrap up by Fall 2020.

There is not chaotic on design with the 21-story hotel, magnifying glass no need for its rendering. (Hello YIMBY)
Please pardon me for stinking up the place: It needs balconies I see. (You’re welcome).
Belongs to Nazi Germany, Peron’s Argentina or Mussolini Italy, now finally come to NYC of 21st Century, an example good fit in Herr Bill Der Blasio vision of Green New Deal architecture. Does it runs by solar, and use hotel guest peep and poop regenerate to clean water and baked bread???
Her Bill Der Blasio and his fascistic Band from New Green Deal Arkitects, herrshaften.
Herr Bill Der Blasio, made mistake, forgive me for my German.
A New Green Dealt Arkitects, straight from Nazi Germany of 1930s. Herr Bill Der Blasio and his band approved it!!! Heil to Him and his primed beloved architect… AOC is sure to love it too, her family will stay here…
You are hard to tolerate. I really wish you would go away. Perhaps the mental ward can take your laptop away?
I won’t tolerate Nazis, they initiated witchhunt against Conservatives and Trump, they didn’t tolerate against Breitbart News but they allowed Antifa and Marxist theories ruin our daily life.
I may tolerate leftist if they stop witchhunt against Donald Trump and his advisors!!!
Are you a real human? I don’t know what’s more depressing, you’re a computer problem to sound like a deranged idiot or your a real life deranged idiot who walks among us.
Pile of trash. But unlike the crackpot above, it’s not BdB’s or AOC’s fault unless your tinfoil hat is fitting too tight.
Please name worst building designed by this “architect”, but I guess this one will be crowned the most ugly structures ever built in NYC. Thank you Gene Kaufman. You worked really hard for designing this ugly pile of trash.
I suggest the name for this hotel project as “scarface”, and one architectural detail is missed, the concrete faces of BdB and AOC decorating the rooftop mechanicals. One Face for AOC, BdB, Chuck Schumer, Pelosi. Also restaurant bar By GND of BdB/AOC, serving Russian Ctolychnaya Vodka and Not From Farting Cow Beefless Steaks.
Bill Der Blasio, “what is good for NY is good for the whole country…”
Bill Der Blasio for President, Gene Kaufman for His Mein Arkitect…
I think 5 year old will design a much better buildung.
The Building, The Haus, from East Germany of 1960, missed a portion of Berlin’s Wall.
From 50 hotels this architect designed and built, this one is a crown jewel of “ugliness”.
Too many comments, not enough buildings!
Gene Kaufman can’t even RENDER a building well.
This isn’t Kaufman’s best, nor is it his worst.
Not worst at least, missing East Germany aka 1950s. With statue of Lenin on the top!!!
Ugly buildings seem to be all the rage these days in NYC, so it’s hardly surprising that yet another is about to be built!
At least it’s NOT a skyline defining, impossible to miss eyesore like most of the Super Talls being built in NYC of late, and especially the cluster of truly ugly Super Talls built/rising/announced in Hudson Yards (other than 35 which turned out much better than its renderings, and actually is a welcome addition to an otherwise dismal and appallingly ugly set of Super Talls now blighting NYC’s increasingly less majestic skyline).
So, as ugly as this latest Gene Kaufman abomination is, at least one won’t have to see it from every direction and miles away from the city as we do for that ugliest Super Tall of them all (so far, that is), which 30 Hudson Yards easily has the “distinction” of being – and which also just might be the ugliest Super Tall in the world, too. ☹️
Can I get signed up for an apartment at flatbush caton flats, pls. Send info.
