The Department of City Planning is now reviewing proposals to construct a new 11-story affordable housing property at 1949 Bathgate Avenue in the Tremont neighborhood of The Bronx. Before construction can begin, the agency must approve up-zoned text amendments to permit the construction of a tall, dense multifamily building.
The site was formerly occupied by a church and rectory building which is currently being demolished. The new building will debut as St. Joseph Apartments.
Designed by Magnusson Architecture and Planning, the building will comprise over 267,000 square feet and house up to 287 permanently affordable rental units. The forked massing of the building makes creative use of the large assemblage and accommodates a sizeable terrace at the center of the property. Future occupants will also have access to multiple roof terraces along the periphery of the building.
The facade of the structure comprises a mix of black and bronzed metal paneling with a cubic glass column that runs up the center of the building. Renderings also appear to illustrate a large solar array above the roof of the building.
The requisite Environmental Assessment Statement includes a negative declaration from the Department of City Planning which means there is no anticipated adverse impact to the surrounding neighborhood in regard to air quality, public safety, architectural disturbance, infrastructure burden, or displacement of current residents and businesses. If all goes in favor of the developer, construction is expected to last at least two years and open to the public as early as 2023.
There is no official project timeline for the new building at this phase of development.

Would be interesting if they could reincorporate some of the stone from the church into the base of the new building. Also an image of the church would have been justified for this article…it was a beautiful building.
Please very interested
Good location with a good design. Nice.
The rendering and the massing diagrams don’t match up at all.
I went to that church/school 1st thru 8th grade in the 60s. Sad to see it gone.
Glad to see handsome design in The Bronx! More please.
