Foundation work has begun at 308 West 43rd Street, the site of a two-building residential development in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by Handel Architects and developed by Taconic Partners under the 311 West 42nd Street Associates LLC, the 373,133-square-foot project will yield 321 apartments averaging 839 square feet apiece as well as 25,202 square feet of retail space on the lower floors. Triton Construction is serving as the general contractor for the property, which is located between West 42nd and 43rd Streets and Eighth and Ninth Avenues, directly north of the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
Excavation has continued to progress since our last update in January, and work has now commenced on the reinforced concrete foundation slab and surrounding walls on the eastern end of the property.
Excavation is still occurring on the western half of the land around the dirt ramp that leads trucks and machinery onto West 43rd Street. This should wrap up in the coming months, perhaps by the end of spring, and construction will likely reach street level by the end of the year. The cellar levels will house a mix of commercial and mechanical space.
Renderings and diagrams below depict the taller 33-story tower to stand along West 42nd Street with an architectural height of around 399 feet tall. Inside will be 284,616 square feet in the “Special Clinton District.” There still hasn’t been a complete, overall rendering of the structure, though the appearance of the lower levels in the rendering should give us a general sense of what to expect from the façade. It is shown to be made up of brick masonry walls with a staggered, irregular window grid. It was previously reported that the roof of the edifice will accommodate an open-air deck with planters, seating, and an unspecified recreational area.
The shorter sibling would go up against West 43rd Street and span 89,808 square feet with only seven floors. Both structures will be joined by a one-story podium with frontage along both West 42nd and West 43rd Streets.
YIMBY last stated that 308 West 43rd Street is planned to be constructed in a single phase over the course of three years, and completion would likely be sometime in 2024.
