KPF to Redesign Stalled Office Skyscraper at 3 West 29th Street in NoMad, Manhattan

The final building on YIMBY’s Turkey Week rundown of stalled projects is 3 West 29th Street, a 34-story commercial skyscraper in NoMad. Originally designed by Bjarke Ingels Group and developed by HFZ Capital Group, the structure was planned to rise 551 feet tall and yield 600,000 square feet of office space, but work has failed to progress beyond the early stages of excavation. Pavarini McGovern is the general contractor for the property, which is located between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.

Excavation was getting underway at the time of our last update in 2020, but work stalled shortly thereafter. Since then, an undisclosed developer took over from HFZ and brought Kohn Pedersen Fox on to redesign the tower. No new renderings have been released. The following images are of BIG’s original concept for the project, which was initially dubbed “29th & 5th.”

Photos from early November show the property in much the same state as it was in late 2020. The southern half of the lot along 29th Street has progressed the furthest, and several steel pilings remain exposed alongside wooden foundation walls at the middle of the property. Most of the site has been cleared of machinery and equipment with the exception of a lone excavator on the northern end.

    Spacious site on the ground level looked ready on the skyscraper would construct, blink to these photos several times so finding excavator on its track. I hope the final stalled need to prepare process of construction, and beautiful loaf of straight rub structure in the same time: Thanks to Michael Young.

    Bjarke definitely designed a turkey with this one, and thank good, it’s being redesigned. This area has iconic historic buildings and something more sympathetic to them would be much more appropriate. Let’s hope KPF gets this right.

    • I think whatever design comes out will be good. KPF does a far better job at respecting the surrounding architectural context than BIG and shows a lot more attention to detail than something like Bjarke’s stack of toy blocks for his 2 WTC proposal. That was a huge slap in the face for New York City and was so ugly

  3. Doesn’t fit the neighborhood and 600K sf of new office space is the last thing we need in this city right now!

    • Yes. Looks like a great spot for a nice apartment building or hotel.

    • How many times do you have to be told: There IS a need for modern office space. Work-at-home for everyjob/everyone is NOT the future (if that’s what you’re implying); employers hate it. And if you havent heard, leasing percentages for the new office buildings (such as in HY) is rather good. And tech Disney and Google just built new offices.

    • Stanley, your comment could not be more wrong and far from the truth. How do you explain what’s being built at Hudson Yards, Hudson Square, and along Park Avenue in Midtown East. Have you not seen the new 270 Park Avenue that’s currently going up or 425 Park Avenue that’s almost 100 percent leased?!?!

      Not a single one of those projects are being built on spec because there IS a demand for new office space in New York City.

      I recommend you shut your mouth and stop commenting with a clueless and narrow mindset; it’s very disrespectful to everyone on Yimby.

  5. Yes! I’m so happy to hear that KPF is redesigning this project. I’ve been haunted by this design for a long time because of its disrespect for the Empire State Building.

  6. Thank god, at this point Bjarke is just phoning it in.

    KOF has done some great stuff lately and I’m excited to see what they’ll do here. I’d love to see mixed use though. Hybrid is here to stay and no one needs big floor plates anymore.

    • If zoning allows can almost guarantee it will be mixed use at the very least if not entirely residential. No developer wants to build new office right now period.
