Construction is rising on 218 Front Street, a seven-story two-building residential complex in Vinegar Hill, Brooklyn. Designed by S. Wieder Architect and developed and built by Chess Builders, the project will yield 218 rental apartments with 66 affordable housing units, as well as 350 square feet of commercial space and 180 square feet of community space. The site is bound by Front Street to the north and York Street to the south, and was formerly occupied by a one-story industrial warehouse and an open-air lumber yard.
Crews were working on the foundations below street level with some excavation yet to be completed at the time of our last update in mid June. Since then, the entire substructure was formed and the northernmost building of 218 Front Street had risen four stories above ground. Only three levels remain before topping out, which could potentially happen by the middle of August. Recent photographs show multiple trucks arriving on site to deliver concrete via a pumping arm parked on Front Street.
Meanwhile, the opposite seven-story sibling is just beginning to rise above the sidewalk scaffolding running along York Street. This structure could possibly top out near the end of summer.
Exterior renderings depict 218 Front Street with a light-colored brick façade framing a grid of floor-to-ceiling windows lined with gold-hued trim. Some of the windows are split into a pair of narrow and wide rectangular panes. The sixth floor is clad with more expansive glass panels, and is interspersed with multiple setbacks that will make room for private terraces for a select number of units. The lower floors feature a wide two-story rectangular cutout for the main entrance. The flanking retail frontage utilizes a similar approach with broad floor-to-ceiling windows and thick gold-colored frames. A list of residential amenities has yet to be revealed, though one possibility is on-site parking, as hinted with the garage door on the right side of the below rendering.
The closest subway to the property is the F train at the York Street station, at the corner of York and Jay Streets.
218 Front Street has an anticipated completion date of December 2024, as noted on site.
