Construction has topped out on Jasper, a 13-story residential building at 2-33 50th Avenue in the Hunters Point district of Long Island City, Queens. Designed by S9 Architecture and developed by The Domain Companies, LMXD, Bridge Investment Group, and The Vorea Group, the 125-foot-tall structure will span 550,000 square feet and yield 499 units in studio to three-bedroom layouts with 150 reserved for affordable housing, as well as 40,000 square feet of retail space, 503 square feet for a community facility under the Brownfield Award, 111 enclosed parking spaces, and a 30-foot-long rear yard. The $370 million project is alternately addressed as 49-20 5th Street and is bound by 49th Avenue to the north, 50th Avenue to the south, and 5th Street to the east.

The steel and reinforced concrete superstructure was built to its pinnacle since our last update in late December, when construction was closing in on the final levels. Recent photographs show the building’s window grid and red brick façade taking shape behind scaffolding and netting, and the steel-framed podium built along 50th Avenue with a sloped roof line and angled walls that complement the massing of the tower directly to the north.

The below renderings provide an aerial perspective of the entire sprawling project from the south. The design blends modern and traditional aesthetics with sections of glass curtain walls framed by metal paneling and traditional brick with industrial-inspired windows. The top of the podium and the towers feature landscaped terraces, swimming pools, and room for solar panels.

Residential amenities at Jasper will include multiple outdoor terraces, a swimming pool, a fitness center, a yoga studio, bike storage, multiple landscaped courtyards, a game room, package lockers, personal storage, dedicated outdoor dining and barbecue areas, a residential lounge with dedicated coworking spaces, and several green roofs.

Local grocery store Dumbo Market recently committed to a 13,500-square-foot lease at the property in a deal brokered by Igloo. The market plans to relocate from its current home across the street and open its new doors upon the building’s completion.

The closest subway to the site is the local 7 train at the Vernon Boulevard station to the east at the corner of 50th Avenue and Vernon Boulevard.

Jasper is being engineered to achieve LEED Platinum certification, and is slated to be completed in the first quarter of 2025.

This could be really good. I hope they paint the signage on the brick walls as shown.

  2. All around great looking development. Love how the massing corresponds to the location of the Steinway (Flushing Line) Tunnels.

Creative corner! It’s like the first line of defense, that must be viewed from the outside: Thanks to Michael Young.

Almost two floors of mechanical floors with vents so close to the street is reprehensible and very pedestrian-hostile. The rest of the building is incredibly bland to boot. Why would they choose SLCE? Don’t they just value-engineer the work of other architects, usually? And do we expect better from Fetner? Not really…

Oops. I scrolled down a little too far in the comments and ended up on another page! I really hate that feature. This comment was meant for The Bold in LIC.
