Vanderbilt University has received approval for academic programming from the New York Board of Regents, marking the final approval necessary in the creation of its campus in the Chelsea, Manhattan. The new Vanderbilt University–New York City campus, the university’s first outside of Nashville, will span 2.7 acres and include 13 buildings covering nearly a full city block bounded by Ninth and Tenth Avenues and West 20th to West 21st Streets. Academic programming is set to begin in fall 2026.
The university has secured a 99‑year lease agreement for the Chelsea site, signed last fall with The General Theological Seminary. Vanderbilt is already operating public‑facing academic initiatives at the site: a lecture series launched in spring 2024 drew over 600 attendees.
The New York campus will initially host two programs: an Undergraduate Semester Program primarily for juniors and seniors, and a Master of Science in Business and Technology. Undergraduate students will live on site and participate in coursework, internships, and research opportunities, while the graduate curriculum will draw from Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management and School of Engineering. Additional undergraduate summer and intensive programs are also planned for future years.
The Chelsea campus is accessible by several nearby subway stations, including the 14th Street station, which is served by the A, C, E, and L trains.

I’m surprised no one else bought this site over the years.
Wow
Bravo,on choise of site.
What a lovely place for a campus!
it doesn’t say what streets the site is bound by?
9thAvenue and 10th Avenue between 20th and 21st Streets
How are the town homes on West 20th street?
Such a gorgeous site. Glad it’s being used academically.
I believe this announcement of Final Approval is very good news for NYC. This project should dearly help keep the neighborhood selected in good hands to be fully maintained and improved!
Idyllic
nice property with character
Will be a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and the city. Good news.
Anchor down!
Prayers for the 3 member crew of the Vanderbilt Life Flight that crashed Saturday in TN.
Site was an historic Episcopal-Anglican seminary, many, many decades. Mutation is a loss, for strictly religious seminary, a gain for utilization of buildings and retention of graceful s19th Century buildings. A blessed preservation!
huge win win win for all involved.
Kudos
Great area for a new campus. Definitely a 3-4 yrs construction build
