New renderings have been revealed for the $60 million education campus slated for construction at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. Designed in a collaboration between ARO, SCAPE, and Colloqate, the 7-acre complex will be operated by Runway Green and is planned to provide education to nearly 50,000 school students across New York City’s public school system. The property is located within the Gateway National Recreation Area on the site of a historic airfield that served early general aviation and functioned as a Naval base during World War II.
The above rendering provides an aerial perspective of the green campus, which is surrounded by Jamaica Bay to the south and the nearby Marine Park neighborhood to the north. The following renderings preview the new landscaped campus grounds with expansive gardens serving as the focal point of the complex.
A sectional rendering highlights the sustainability features of the main three-story structure, including a rooftop solar array, bird-friendly windows, a rainwater harvesting system, and a high-performance envelope.
The development has already acquired $9.3 million in public investment toward the $60 million budget. Notable contributions include $1 million from Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and $3.3 million from the New York City Council. Senator Chuck Schumer and New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand secured $2 million in federal funding, while another $3 million in public funding has been designated for site improvements supporting the new campus.
Runway Green secured the site under a 60-year lease with the National Park Service is working to secure partnerships with local organizations such as the City University of New York, NYC Outward Bound Schools, Solar One, NY Sun Works, Billion Oyster Project, and The Urban Assembly.
Phase one is slated to break ground next year and will consist of a 3-acre farm, a public high school, a welcome center, a ropes course, and campgrounds that will be developed with The Campaign Against Hunger. An anticipated completion date has yet to be announced.
