Extell has been exceedingly silent when it comes to details regarding New York City’s soon-to-be tallest tower at 217 West 57th Street, besides a minor press release last month indicating the building would be dubbed Central Park Tower (despite the fact it is not located on Central Park, and that views of the Park will be obstructed for the first 950 feet by 220 Central Park South). But construction on Nordstrom Tower continues to chug along, and the first crane is now up, signaling the structure will soon rise above ground level.

The photos come from YIMBY reader ILNY, and also show fresh signage indicating that work has temporarily stopped, due to a dispute between two construction groups. Like administrative overhead, the strike is likely to be only a minor interruption.

While the new crane is the biggest sign of progress visible to pedestrians on the street, significant headway has also been made on the supertall’s foundation, which is nearing street-level. The core of the actual tower is located on the eastern part of the site, and is now almost even with 57th Street.

The rest of the pit will sit beneath the actual Nordstrom store, and that portion is a ways behind the tower’s core. 432 Park’s evolution was recorded in its entirety by webcams, but 217 West 57th Street lacks the same kind of coverage (and transparency in any way shape or form has been completely neglected, although YIMBY has procured an official rendering and we’ve created additional views of the future 1,775’+ structure as well).
Demolition has also made significant headway at 1780 Broadway, part of which will be integrated into the new structure, due to the exterior’s landmarked status.

Completion of Nordstrom Tower is currently expected by 2018, but with the foundation work for the tower portion now nearing ground-level, the building should begin making an impact on the skyline within the next year or so.
