Demolition is now complete at 38 West 36th Street, which will soon host yet another hotel by Peter Poon. Permits filed with the Department of Buildings indicate the building will rise 22 floors and 229 feet, meaning it will be invisible due to its location on the southern periphery of the Midtown skyline. The property is being developed by Executive Resorts & Hotels, though the company’s website has no renderings of the project.
If the building does resemble Poon’s recent work, it will be architecturally incoherent, and covered in a garishly cheap facade. Much of the sreet is now dominated by cheap hotels, but the latest Poon – and another, set to rise at 59 West 36th Street – will cement the block’s transition from pre-war charm to post-2000 shlock.
With 161 rooms, 38 West 36th will barely alleviate the massive demand for new hotel space in Manhattan, though it will add to the new hospitality boom in New York, which is showing signs of accelerating.
