Demolition Imminent for KPF-Designed Supertall at 343 Madison Avenue in Midtown East, Manhattan

Demolition work is ramping up at 343 Madison Avenue, site of a 1,050-foot commercial supertall in Midtown East. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox and developed by Boston Properties, the 754,120-square-foot structure will yield 748,618 square feet of office space, 2,130 square feet of retail space, and 2,372 square feet of subterranean circulation paths to Grand Central Terminal and the future East Side Access project. The skyscraper is replacing a 105-year-old 15-story building between East 44th and 45th Streets that formerly housed the Metropolitan Transportation Authority headquarters.

Snøhetta’s Glass Roof and Steel Canopy for 550 Madison Avenue Takes Shape in Midtown East, Manhattan

Work is progressing on the renovation of 550 Madison Avenue, a 684-foot-tall commercial skyscraper in Midtown East, with construction underway on Snøhetta‘s triple-height steel-framed glass canopy over its new public garden. Designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee, the 37-story Postmodern landmark opened in 1984 and is undergoing a 21,000-square-foot overhaul led by The Olayan Groupand  RXR Realty that will yield a new café, elevated and ground-level landscaping, expanded seating with additional tables, and public restrooms. AECOM Tishman is the general contractor, Gensler is designing the lobby space, Orange County Ironworks is the steel fabricator, and Gabriel Steel Erectors is assembling the steel over a rectangular space on the western side of 550 Madison Avenue that spans between East 55th and 56th Streets.

131-141 East 47th Street Rises Above Street Level in Midtown East, Manhattan

Construction is now above street level on 131-141 East 47th Street, a 500-foot-tall residential skyscraper in Midtown East. Designed by Ismael Leyva Architects and developed by Silverback Development, the 34-story structure will yield 200 apartments ranging from studios to two-bedroom units as well as 5,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space with frontage along West 47th Street. Silverback was brought onto the project by Hopson Development Holdings, which purchased the parcel for $115 million in December 2019 from the original developers, New Empire Real Estate. Structure Tech New York and Cauldwell Wingate are constructing the building.
