Superstructure work continues on the tower component of the Avalon West Chelsea, which is now at its eighteenth floor – the building will eventually rise a total of 30 stories. It has now passed the mid-rise portion of the development in height, where cladding keeps marching upwards.
So far, the result is very bland; the brick-work, which is fine enough on its own, is interrupted by the exposed floor-plates, which are visually prominent. Unlike Related’s tower at 500 West 30th Street, the Avalon West Chelsea seems like it will end up as a dominating, hulking mass that has little in common with the neighborhood surroundings – it does span the entire block’s length.
Completion of the Avalon West Chelsea – which has an official address of 298 Eleventh Avenue – is anticipated for later this year. Foundation work began post-Sandy, and the building has gone up very quickly for such a major project. The development will offer a total of 710 units, making it one of the largest projects adjacent to The High Line so far.
