Construction is making quick headway at 33 Beekman Street, which will soon be a 33-story dormitory for Pace University. The architect of record is Gene Kaufman, and the developer is The Naftali Group; the building will have 378 ‘units’ in total.
As of the last update — from early October — 33 Beekman’s foundations were just getting underway. Progress has been rapid; the structure is approaching its tenth floor, and beginning to make an impact on the neighborhood. YIMBY’s elevated perspective is from The Lara, which looks out directly over the site.
33 Beekman’s rise highlights the surrounding neighborhood’s potential, and the juxtaposition of the new tower with adjacent buildings — including a parking garage — indicates that the vicinity’s development boom may just be beginning. 8 Spruce Street has been an initial catalyst for revitalization, and the addition of The Lara and new projects at 92 and 120 Fulton Street will further enhance the streetscape’s vibrancy — more pedestrians won’t hurt, either.
Completion is expected in 2015.
