Work on 460 Main Street, aka Riverwalk 8, has topped out. One of the newest developments to rise on Roosevelt Island, the project contains the first permanent affordable housing to be built on the island. The 21-story, 340-unit building is designed by Handel Architects and is being developed as a joint venture between The Related Companies and Hudson Companies. Riverwalk 8 is the eighth component in the nine-building Riverwalk rental complex.

460 Main Street only broke ground in January and rapidly ascended along the eastern edge of the narrow island. The building will contain a mix of 81 studios, 158 one-bedrooms, 51 two-bedrooms, and 50 three-bedroom units. Rents will average $505 a month for a studio and upward of $3,431 for a three-bedroom home. Amenities have not been announced. Applications for the units will be done next year through the city’s housing lottery system, Housing Connect.

The F train at the Roosevelt Island subway station is a short walk from the front doors, while the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park is a 20-minute walk to the southern tip of Roosevelt Island. Access for the tram to Manhattan is a five-minute walk, and Cornell’s satellite campus is a ten-minute walk south of the Queensboro Bridge.

Work on 460 Main Street is expected to complete in early 2021.

  1. Amazes me how quickly this building has gone up.

  2. It was built on the cheap. Roosevelt Island used to be beautiful and quiet, now it has buildings crammed in every available space and an endless stream of automobile traffic up and down the street.
