Exterior work is progressing on The West, a 12-story residential building at 547 West 47th Street in Hell’s Kitchen. Located between West 47th Street and West 48th Street, the 201,000-square-foot project is designed by Concrete and developed by Ironstate Development, CB Developers, and SK Development Group, which purchased the property for $93 million in the summer of 2018. The developers are aiming for LEED certification.
Close-up photographs from street level show the degree of progress the curtain wall has made since our March update. The dark charcoal-colored brick façade now substantially covers the main western elevation along Eleventh Avenue, as seen through the black netting and scaffolding when the sun hits the edifice. There is a mix of stack and running bonds around each of the large industrial-style windows, adding a subtle yet intricate detail to the lower envelope.
Meanwhile, the edges of the protruding floor plates on the upper section have been painted black and are being prepared for the installation of the frames for the floor-to-ceiling glass curtain wall. This dynamic cubic massing with its irregular pattern of cantilevering boxes will create a striking contrast as it rises from the structure’s orthodox rectangular base.
The West will house a car dealership within its 40,000-square-foot ground floor. Above, 219 residential units will be spread across 161,000 square feet of residential space. An average of 27 apartments will be located on the first seven levels, with 14 apartments per floor from the eighth to the 12th stories. Amenities include bicycle storage, a pet washing station, a fitness center with a yoga studio for residents, a children’s playroom, a roof deck with a swimming pool, an outdoor dog run, and a greenhouse.
547 West 47th Street is expected to be completed sometime in 2021.
