For the first time, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s family has organized a show of rare and never-before-seen works since the artist’s untimely death in 1988. The family has partnered with internationally acclaimed architect David Adjaye to design the exhibition, which launches April 9 at the Starrett-Lehigh Building, at 601 West 26th Street in West Chelsea.

“Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure,” will feature over 200 paintings, drawings, ephemera, and artifacts from the family’s collection. The exhibition will also feature recreations of Basquiat’s New York City art studio formerly located on Great Jones Street and the Michael Todd VIP Room of the Palladium nightclub, for which the artist created two paintings.

Arper, an Italian design brand, will outfit the exhibition space to recreate the original feeling of the Michael Todd VIP Room at the Palladium. The entire exhibit will span 15,000 square feet.

  1. Very excited for this exhibit! Looking forward to the re-creation of the Mike Todd room. Although one could never replicate the crowd and vibe of the time a place, the Basquaits behind the bar were spectacular and have seen very little documentation of them over the years. My memory is fuzzy. I think they were frescos and were lost when Palladium was razed for a generic NYU dorm (pretty tragic…the theater/club/culture…eradicated for banal pomo.) I hope the exhibit does justice to these works. I have high hopes!

  2. They don’t make them like Starrett-Lehigh anymore,( or for that matter, like Jean-Michel Basquiat )

Im so excited and looking forward to go see the exhibit. I have a Basquiat Original.

  9. Too many Basquiat exhibitions over the last 7 years and his sisters have tried to commodify him to the point he’s become a bad trend.

  10. What date does the exhibit close

Do you have to buy ticekts to see this show or just make reservations at the building site? I don’t see enough information about tickets.
