Exterior work is nearing completion on 231 East 51st Street, a five-story commercial office building in the Midtown East neighborhood of Turtle Bay. The 3,682-square-foot lot was once home to a prewar five-story structure that served as the Consulate of the Republic of Singapore. The property was sold to Texas-based travel firm Frosch in December 2017 for $22.05 million. Clune Construction is the general contractor for the project, which is located between Second and Third Avenues.
The light exterior appears to be composed of rectangular metal paneling that divides the main southern elevation into three vertical groups of floor-to-ceiling windows with grey mullions and spandrels made of white marble. The ground floor remains obscured by sidewalk scaffolding and construction equipment. A crane was spotted with workers focusing around the roof parapet of the building.
There is only one on-site rendering of 231 East 51st Street posted that shows the final outcome. The ground floor will eventually have a dark canopy over the entrance bearing the building’s address, and the Frosch logo along the main doors.
A formal completion date for 231 East 51st Street is unclear at the moment, but it’s conceivable to see work wrap up before the end of the year.
