155-165 West 29th Street Passes Halfway Mark in Chelsea, Manhattan

Construction has passed the halfway mark on 155-165 West 29th Street, a 17-story self-storage facility in Chelsea, Manhattan. Designed by Mancini Duffy and developed by Highland Development Ventures LLC and The Davis Companies, the 223-foot-tall structure will yield 180,000 square feet and 6,300 units. The developers acquired the property in early 2021 for $62.5 million, and construction costs are estimated at $84 million. Div West 29th Street LLC is the owner, Cauldwell Wingate is the contractor, and McNamara Salvia is the structural engineer for the property, which is located between Sixth and Seventh Avenues.

Excavation was still ongoing at the time of our last update in January, with most of the work obscured behind sidewalk fencing. Now the reinforced concrete superstructure has risen above the first setback. The reduction in floor plate size from the tiered massing should enable construction to proceed at a faster pace as work progresses, with topping out possible by this winter.

The rendering in the main photo is oriented looking north from across West 29th Street and shows the look of the main southern elevation. The building is mostly windowless and clad in dark gray horizontally corrugated metal panels, and the setbacks will be illuminated with upward-pointing spotlights. The ground floor features floor-to-ceiling glass surrounding the front doors and drive-in loading dock.

The Class A self-storage facility will feature all-electric systems with full climate control, electronic access control, security monitoring, motion-sensor lighting, and a comprehensive sprinkler system.

155 West 29th Street is targeting a completion date of spring 2023.

  1. This is absurd. Our idiot electeds have effectively ended hotel dev with their dumb permit system but these monsters are fine? Self storage should be banned in NYC.

  2. Let’s see…
17 stories of “crap” that people are never going to use, yet pay a fortune to store for years!

We truly are a wasteful materialistic society. 😔

  3. The west 20s and 30s have just been pummeled by terrible. I guess we should just be thankful it also doesn’t have a setback.

Also for the record there was a time where “fireproof” storage buildings were actually pretty attractive albeit, like this metal panel dreck, also mostly windowless but usually composed of attractive masonry.
