Demolition Concludes for Extell’s Potential Supertall at 570 Fifth Avenue in Midtown, Manhattan

At number three on our December countdown of the tallest buildings underway in New York is 570 Fifth Avenue, a potential 1,101-foot supertall in Midtown, Manhattan. Developed by Extell, the skyscraper could rise 78 stories and span 1.4 million square feet with hotel and condominium components. Alternately, the plot could give rise to an 860-foot-tall, 47-story office tower yielding more than 1.5 million square feet. ALBA Services is the general contractor for the property, which is located at the northwest corner of Fifth Avenue and West 46th Street.

Since our last update in late June, the final mid-rise occupant of the plot has been razed to street level, and recent photos show excavators finishing up the removal of building remains from the western end of the site. The rest of the property is cleared, and excavation work should get underway soon for the new tower.

Both iterations for 570 Fifth Avenue will feature a multi-story podium topped with a landscaped terrace, and a curtain wall composed of floor-to-ceiling glass framed with bronze-hued paneling.

The supertall design will culminate in a transparent crown with an interior landscaped terrace featuring tall trees, as seen in the below rendering.

Below is a chart that breaks down the scope of each design outcome.

570 Fifth Avenue’s two skyscraper design outcomes.

Foundation work is expected to last roughly 12 months, followed by the rise of the superstructure for 28 months with a three-month overlap with the initial below-grade work. After that, interior work will last another 28 months with an overlap of 11 months with the previous stage in construction.

YIMBY predicts 570 Fifth Avenue to be completed around the end of 2027 to early 2028, based on the schedule above.

A transparent crown was beautiful and softly lighted up over low-rise structures below, but the supertall encounters on the whole skyscrapers nearby. It charms to see distance between these towers, and a curtain wall of floor-to-ceiling glass likeable with sharp-featured: Thanks to Michael Young.

  2. I like the residential/hotel design the best. However, the office design isn’t completely bad either.

  3. How can a project this far along not have final plans or approvals yet, or even a concept of residential vs office?

  4. I assume the best business to own in NYC is a DEMOLITION COMPANY! 🤗

The other one is a TREE TRIMMING COMPANY, that specializes in tree maintenence on glass towers! 🤣

  5. What shall it be? An office building? A hotel?
    Decisions, decisions, decisions.
Why not combine the worst of both worlds?
Three days on as an office, four days off as a hotel room?
Even netter, as the amazing new World Headquarters of Twitter/Tesla/SpaceX,
Lord Elon could use it to extract the very last drop of blood/sweay/tears & fears from his vassals,
by using the rooms as both office and hotel room, according to his ever more erratic whims.
Perhaps even charging his feudal minions for the privelege of working
24 hours days – with comfy beds & room service at the ready, for a price,
…. a worker’s paradise .where you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

    Oh, brave New World!

Yet another typically mediocre Extell profit box. Whatever gets built, if anything, it’s an absolute sin what was destroyed along 5th Avenue. I specifically remember this row of delightful buildings, now gone for some A-whole at Extell who can never make enough money. Good luck trying to fill another boring box in the post-pandemic changed world.

  7. So, we’re gonna have 262 Fifth Ave (aka—“The Lockboxes”) a few blocks south of ESB, and this this a few more blocks to the north…ugh. Maybe you’ll still be able to see ESB from Top Of The Rock, or maybe not? A shame.

  8. It IS strange they’re building this without knowing what it will be. Hopfully the mixed use rendering.
