Hudson Arts Building’s Foundations Progress at 220 Eleventh Avenue in West Chelsea, Manhattan

220 11th Avenue, designed by Studios Architecture.

Foundation work is progressing for the Hudson Arts Building, a ten-story commercial structure at 220 Eleventh Avenue in West Chelsea. Designed by STUDIOS Architecture and developed by The Moinian Group, the 145-foot-tall project will yield office space with column-free floor plates ranging from 17,500 to 25,000 square feet, as well as retail space. 220 Eleventh LLC is the owner, AECOM Tishman is the general contractor, and JLL is the exclusive leasing agent for the property, which is located along Eleventh Avenue between West 25th Street and West 26th Streets.

Excavation was just getting started at the time of our last update in June 2022, with piling machines and excavators working at street level. Since then, the site has been fully unearthed and reinforced concrete foundation walls now line the edges of the site. Machinery and equipment are scattered across the floor slab, above which the cellar levels, inner columns, and interior walls will be formed over the coming months, followed by the rise of the superstructure sometime in the spring. Given its modest height, the project could potentially top out before the end of the year.

The main rendering shows the Hudson Arts Building clad in floor-to-ceiling glass panels framed with a grid of thick horizontal beams and narrower vertical columns. The office floors will have ceiling spans exceeding 17 feet, and a select number of suites will come with private outdoor terraces. An 11,000-square-foot roof deck will cap the structure, offering tenants views of the surrounding neighborhood, including the rising Hudson Yards skyline to the north. Amenities at 220 Eleventh Avenue include ground-floor bathing areas with showers, lockers, bicycle storage, and refill stations for bicycle tires.

The nearest subways from the site are the C and E trains at the 23rd Street station along Eighth Avenue. Also nearby is the 7 train at the 34th Street-Hudson Yards station to the north, and the 1, 2, 3, A, and Long Island Rail Road, New Jersey Transit, and Amtrak trains at Pennsylvania station.

The Hudson Arts Building at 220 Eleventh Avenue is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2024.

The latest pace of progress for the future rising structure, these photos work with updated views through the project. And the main rendering was reported that the design reveals its details, such as a grid of thick horizontal beams and narrower vertical columns. I was joined to this part cause I like parallel lines: Thanks to Michael Young.

  2. I really want someone to dig up the Zaha Hadid design for this. While a handsome building, its such a missed opportunity especially given what’s south of it.

  3. Very derivative of KPF’s 55 Hudson Yards right around the corner…would have been nice to see something more original

  4. The building immediately south is nice and NW is Starrett which is also nice and, as I remember, is also a Moinian building, but right across 11th are modern low-rise industrial and of no great shakes. I only want to know – how so Hudson? It’s around there nearby, the big river, as are Hudson Yards. Is Hudson simply a strong brand?
