Construction is steadily progressing on 31-28 Northern Boulevard, a new 12-story Public Storage facility in Long Island City, Queens. Designed by Tao Architecture + Design, the ground-up development will add more storage units to the company’s multi-building complex. E. W. Howell is the general contractor for the property, which is nestled between two existing sites Public Storage Inc. currently owns and utilizes, and is situated by the corner of Northern Boulevard and 39th Avenue.

Recent photographs show the steel-framed superstructure reaching the 12th level with the framing of the ceiling awaiting to be fully installed. Metal decking lines each level, along with temporary orange netting across the edge of the floor plates. A portion o the exterior facade is already going up along the eastern side next to the mechanical hoist. The overall height blends with the two flanking buildings.

The main exterior rendering depicts 31-28 Northern Boulevard with the signature orange color used on the main northern elevation amongst a grid of rectangular paneling with interstitial horizontal stripes. The northwestern corner will be lined with transparent floor-to-ceiling glass showing the grid of orange corrugated metal doors for each storage unit, and light-colored mullions. Meanwhile the rest of the windowless eastern and western sides have gray paneling. The Public Storage signage and logo will be displayed above the parking lot and ground floor.

The nearest subway station from the address is the 39 Av stop to the north, servicing the N and W lines.

31-28 Northern Boulevard’s anticipated completion date is slated for next summer, as noted on site.

  1. I have no problem with this. Long term, once Sunnyside is decked over and redeveloped, this crap along Northern Blvd will be primed for replacement.
