The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission is reviewing a proposal for modifications to 138 Grand Street, a cast iron residential building in Soho, Manhattan. The development team overseeing this project is proposing the installation of a barrier-free access ramp at street-level for the building. The project aims to enhance accessibility for residents and visitors while maintaining the building’s historic architectural integrity.
Proposed work includes constructing a switchback ramp system at the residential entry, replacing a temporary ramp. A hearing is required with the LPC because the new ramp will feature landings.
138 Grand Street was built in 1869. It stands six stories tall and comprises of 17 apartments. The building’s façade consists of painted cast iron typical of buildings of the era.
Transit nearby the property includes subway stations with service for the N, Q, R, W, J, Z, and 6 trains.
