Remodeling and expansion work is nearing completion on 501 President Street, a four-story residential building in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Designed by Opera Studio Architecture for E. Krutoy, the project involved the vertical expansion of a 125-year-old three-story building that formerly measured 2,400 square feet. The revamped building will yield three rental units. The property is located between 3rd Avenue and Nevins Street.
Recent photographs show the expanded structure enclosed in a beige paneled façade on the main elevation along President Street and around the edges and original parapet of the lot line walls. The front profile features a revised fenestration of four tall windows per level, and slats at the top forming a railing for a terrace. The new fourth story is set back from street level, and additional windows were added to the eastern wall following the slope of the stairwell.
Some work is still wrapping up on the roof parapet and first story, which remains obscured behind wooden construction fencing.
The rendering below shows 499 President Street with railings in front of three ground-floor windows and planter boxes for flowers in front of the upper windows, although the latter were omitted from the final outcome. Planters also surround the stoop leading to the front door. A pergola is depicted over the terrace in front of the fourth-floor expansion, but it remains unclear whether this will be constructed.

The site is a short walk from the R train at the Union Street station.
A completion date of July 2024 is posted on the construction board, though some time in the first half of 2025 is most likely.

I guess it looks better now, but that roof deck “railing” is most unfortunate in execution.
Unofficial rendering with plant pots will not have a negative impact on urban planning, so they are beautiful: Thanks.
Oh my 😬
