The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has signed three infrastructure contracts totaling $18 million to upgrade operations at the Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The investment marks the initial phase of a broader redevelopment plan for the 122-acre terminal site. The contracts include demolition of four decommissioned cranes, acquisition of a new all-electric ship-to-shore crane, and critical pier repairs at Red Hook Container Terminal’s Pier 10.

Demolition of the four out-of-service cranes—two on Pier 9A and two on Pier 10—is scheduled from April through August 2025 and will be carried out by Atlantic Coast Dismantling. The aging cranes, some more than 50 years old, are being removed due to damage and structural instability. Their removal will make way for a new electric crane being delivered by Liebherr USA, with manufacturing by Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. in Ireland. Delivery and installation are expected to take two years, with the crane entering service by spring 2027. Concurrently, Pier 10 will undergo fender and structural repairs between May and September 2025 to maintain operational integrity.

These efforts are funded as part of an $80 million city investment announced last year, with $15 million allocated for the new electric crane, $2 million for pier repairs, and $1 million for crane removal. The upgrades are intended to support NYC’s Blue Highway and Harbor of the Future initiatives, which aim to increase waterborne freight transport and reduce reliance on truck traffic. The current infrastructure work sets the foundation for a long-term transformation of the terminal into a mixed-use maritime and community hub.
