Governor Kathy Hochul has announced $101 million in state funding to support 25 freight and port infrastructure projects across New York, including four initiatives in New York City. The funding, awarded through the Passenger and Freight Rail Assistance Program (PFRAP), is aimed at enhancing the reliability, resiliency, and environmental sustainability of the state’s trade corridors. The New York City Department of Small Business Services (NYCSBS) and the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) each received $20 million to advance rail and maritime projects in the city.

NYCSBS will direct its two $10 million awards toward maritime freight improvements in The Bronx and Brooklyn. One project will support the creation of a fully electrified maritime hub at Hunts Point Marine Terminal, including electric infrastructure for cargo handling and shore power. The second project will rehabilitate and extend the operational life of Pier 10, which serves the Red Hook Container Terminal and supports significant waterfront employment.

LIRR will use its $20 million in funding for infrastructure upgrades in Queens and Brooklyn. The Fresh Pond Yard Bridge will be replaced with a new structure that meets modern loading and clearance standards, ensuring continued freight rail movement on and off Long Island. Additionally, the English Kills Bridge will be rehabilitated to meet current standards, maintaining critical access to a key freight yard in Brooklyn.

“New York’s freight rail network is vital to our economy, and these investments represent a downpayment on a greener, safer, and more productive state,” Governor Hochul said. “Investing in key freight infrastructure is a step forward in reducing New York’s emissions while modernizing our rail system.”

  1. The problem of these large state projects is that the money is always squandered.

I am still waiting for the Port Authority to carry out its original mission to construct a freight rail tunnel from Staten Island to Long Island.

From St George to the Bay Ridge rail yard at 65th Street. The tubes could be large enough for a freight rail track and a subway track, finally connecting Staten Island to the City.
But of course, the ingrained indifference to corruption with state, city and MTA officials means we can’t even get the filthy stations cleaned.

  3. Is that a cruise ship terminal in the Red Hook rendering?

  4. The amount residential tower development around the basins in that Red Hook rendering should be increased tenfold.

  5. Wow🤔, infrastructure improvements & redevelopment plans!?, who would have “THUNK”!!!!, It only took till the year 2026 to realize this is “sorta kinda” IMPERATIVE! Hallelujah, thank God & Amen🙏. Only took a 120+ yrs to cut through the red-tape a beareauracy from HELL to upgrade the 2 CHOKE HOLD CRUMBLING RAIL TUNNELS going in & out of Penn Station under the Hudson River, hey fir all the B.S. delays & &40 billion dollar Argentinian bail outs, etc, decades of futile $ burning in Afghanistan, Iraq, etc, etc, we finally spend a few critical & CRUCIAL dollars in the ole USA domestically, invest in our own infrastructure, what a concept🤔🤷‍♂️🙂😘🌳👍
