Construction has begun on an approximately $10 million restoration of the Morris-Jumel Mansion, the 1765 landmark located at 65 Jumel Terrace in Washington Heights, Manhattan. NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura joined officials from the Historic House Trust, local elected leaders, and community members to mark the start of the project, which aims to preserve Manhattan’s oldest surviving residence. The effort is being undertaken in partnership with NYC Parks, the Historic House Trust, and the Morris-Jumel Mansion, with design work led by Page Ayres Cowley Architecture.

The project follows a multi-year planning process and expands on an earlier initiative first proposed in 2021 as a $2.7 million repair program. Through additional public funding and advocacy, the scope has grown into a two-phase capital project focused on preservation and accessibility upgrades. Work will restore key elements of the historic structure while improving conditions for visitors and ensuring the long-term stability of the building.

The first phase of construction will focus on exterior restoration of the mansion. Planned work includes replacing the roof, restoring historic windows and architectural details, repairing the building’s wood siding, and rehabilitating the porch and columns that define the property’s entrance. Funding for the restoration was allocated through a combination of city and state sources, including contributions secured by current and former elected officials.

The Morris-Jumel Mansion is located within Roger Morris Park in northern Manhattan. Transit nearby the property includes the A and C trains at the 163rd Street–Amsterdam Avenue station and the 1 train at 157th Street.

LONG overdue. We were amazed at the poor condition of this historic building – Wondering how far $10 million will take it towards restoration

A very beautiful, historic house that deserves this preservation. A true Manhattan gem.

  3. Hopefully will be open to the public to tour.

I hope they keep a little money for restoring the gardens surrounding the house. Has looked like a city dump for quite a while. It could look beautiful with new lawns and onrnamental roses
