New renderings have been revealed for the upcoming recladding of the 23-story German House government building at 871-873 First Avenue in the Turtle Bay section of Midtown East, Manhattan. Designed by Sauerbruch Hutton and designed by Studio Gang, the project will introduce a new high-performance façade with integrated photovoltaics and improved ventilation systems. The 31-year-old structure was originally designed by SLCE Architects and serves as the offices of Germany’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Consulate General, and its affiliated cultural partners. The property is located at the southwest corner of First Avenue and East 49th Street, just north of the United Nations headquarters.
The renderings by ArtefactoryLab and depict the Midcentury tower clad in a glass curtain wall framed by an irregular pattern of gray, white, and dark red spandrels. A landscaped terrace and a German flag are visible atop the flat roof. The entrance will also be renovated with taller windows for increased natural lighting, and the sidewalk canopy will be removed.

The nearest subways from the property are the 6, E, and F trains at the Lexington Avenue–53rd Street station. Also nearby are the 4, 5, 6, 7, and S trains and the Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road at Grand Central–42nd Street.
A construction timeline for 871-873 First Avenue has yet to be announced.

Forever. The German House has a whole wall of lot line windows above it. They must have bought the air rights.
Would have been great if in conjunction with this reclad, the German gov could’ve bought that turd out and replaced it with a new cohesive base.
