Plans have emerged for a 30,000-square-foot community center at 70-02 34th Avenue in Jackson Heights, Queens. Developed by the Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens, the structure will house the neighborhood’s first community swimming pool, an indoor gymnasium with basketball courts, and an auditorium-style theater. The project will also offer after-school and summer programs, early childhood education, senior programming, workforce development, and arts and cultural space.
Governor Kathy Hochul joined Queens elected officials at P.S. 398Q on October 14 to announce a $33.8 million investment in the project, the first community center of its kind in Jackson Heights. The facility will serve up to 10,000 children, which the City Council said would make it the largest Boys & Girls Club clubhouse in the country. Residents will be invited to help shape potential additional uses for the site, including affordable housing, child care, outdoor sports and recreation facilities, and a rooftop farm, according to the governor’s office.
Hernandez-Eli Architecture, a Manhattan-based practice founded by Juliet Hernandez-Eli in 2017, produced architectural renderings, zoning studies, and planning drawings for the proposal.
The project follows the state’s October 2025 commitment of $8 million toward an expansion of the club’s existing Astoria facility, which will deliver a new clubhouse with a gymnasium, swimming pool and aquatic center, and planetarium as part of a broader $300 million redevelopment creating more than 200 affordable housing units.
