YIMBY recently went to the sales launch event for the Centrale, aka 138 East 50th Street, one of the newest residential buildings to be completed in Midtown. The site is located between Third Avenue and Lexington Avenue. Pelli Clarke Pelli is the designer of the 71-story, 800-foot-tall skyscraper while SLCE Architects is the executive architect. Ceruzzi Properties is the developer of the Midtown East property. A total of 124 condominiums will be housed within the slender tower of glass and terracotta panels, which feature interiors by Champalimaud. Douglas Elliman Development Marketing is handling both sales and marketing.
The rain and fog may have settled over the city during the event, but they did not impede the impressive views of notable landmarks like the Chrysler Building, the General Electric Building, and the Citigroup Center at 601 Lexington Avenue. 138 East 50th Street is surrounded by a diverse mix of architecture from multiple time periods on all sides. The residential units will take up approximately 253,000 square feet and be spread across 63 floors.

One Vanderbilt made a quick surprise appearance when the fog began to lift. It rises behind the MetLife building, and will be another great addition to the skyline. The illuminated crown will be quite visible to future residents.

The closest subways include the 6 train at the 51st Street station and the E and M trains at Lexington Avenue – 53rd Street station.

Ok, back to topic, this building is generally ok, even it’s pretty artificial glassy slender tower of dozens nearby in 20 street block radius. Unfortunately, this is a New York, New York, and land space is so scarce, that we can’t make anything except slender and tall. Not applied to Outer Boroughs, where everyone may enjoy lowrises and even suburban lifestyle. Except only 5 places in whole NYC reserved for skyscrapers, Midtown and Downtown Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn and Long Island City, and Williamsburg/Greenpoint waterfront. For the rest of city 5 Boroughs you can barely found few dozens highrises, except in some Projects, Starett City and Coop City. But this tower inside the heart of Midtown Manhattan, so why everyone should be complaining about it’s height and slenderness. Better than bare concrete stick on the air with empty side wall without any decoration.

If I’m paying big $ for a NY high rise apt, these are the views I want, not views of central park.
My office is down the block from here. I can’t imagine who would actually want to live at that location. 50th street is disgusting.
