220 Central Park South Pulls Permits For Residents-Only Jean Georges Restaurant

220 Central Park South,. Designed by Robert A. M. Stern.

The amenity list for 220 Central Park South just landed a compelling addition. Jean Georges Vongerichten will manage a 54-seat, residents-only restaurant on the second floor of the Midtown residential skyscraper. The 67-story tower is designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects and contains 593,000 square feet of interior space. Vornado Realty Trust is the developer of the $1.4-billion-dollar project and expects a $3.4 billion sellout.

It’s possible that the restaurant would be positioned to face south and take advantage of the high windows, as seen at the bottom of the photo below.

Records from from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene confirmed Jean Georges’ upcoming presence in the development. The world-famous chef, restaurateur, businessman, and author of a number of best-selling cookbooks manages a number of three-to four-star restaurants across the country and around the world.

The slender reinforced concrete superstructure sits between West 58th Street and West 59th Street and rises 950 feet above Central Park South. SLCE Architects is the executive architect, while the interiors are being designed by Thierry W. Despont.

A completion date for 220 Central Park South has not been formally announced, but it may be finished sometime in the first half of 2020.

  1. Back to the high-rise design progress, when I see the beauty. It’s a peace of mind, including construction, windows and doors. After I went to observe the stress of society. (Thanks to New York YIMBY)

  2. Sooooooo glad the richy riches will be able to dine in splendor without the risk that their gaze will accidentally fall on one of the hoi polloi!! Burros cargado de oro!!!

  3. “This will Be his second restaurant the n New York cavity…”. Are you kidding?

  4. Violet, this is America and anything is possible. Why judge those in a better financial bracket than you apparently are. Articles like this don’t make me jealous. They make me strive harder.

    • Woohoo! Go Maria go! I’m rooting for you! We’re all striving really hard and soon we will be as wealthy as those Russian oligarchs that actually DO buy these apartments. Just a little more sweat and elbow grease and we’ll get there 🙂

  5. “Pulling a Permit” to me at least is a very confusing statement..At first glance and in many other uses PULLING means ‘CANCELING’..But no, in this instance it ‘is’ happening, supposedly ‘pulling’ originates from going to an office and having a clerk pull the permit out of a file to be expedited.

“Pulling Permit” is American idiom means simple “approved for construction”, a second step after “filling permit”. Pulling Permit, means a construction is happening, permit is already approved to start construction.
File a Permit means a preliminary step, Pulling Permit is step further, building clerk is taken “permit” for its sign and stamp it.
      Then Construction is almost iminient.
So, “pulling permit” means “finalize an approval” by Building Department, no objection so far.
Restaurant for residents, means a dinner for residents and their guest only, with prime restaurant staff preparing a food.
This is Uber Wealthy Building even by NYC Standard and this like a privileged club for being a resident here, so have a dine in here.
Like in own Villa or gated Condominium Club.
I don’t understand why people here trying to protest, this wealthy paid more taxes per quarter than most of you and your family have earned per your life!!! 262 million dollars apartment means just a sale tax and luxury taxes paid at time of transaction about 50,000,000 to the city coffins!!! Stop crying about “riche-riches”, just keep working to have a lifestyle, so you don’t worry much about daily expenses!!! Many learning programming, coding, became IT specialist, what’s about you, or your brain worked differently!!!
God created all of us Equal, now it’s up to us, our own abilities to have a better life!!!
Do you think a Socialist System is give you everything for free??? Read a history books or watch movies about how “good for people” was a Socialist System in Stalinist Russia or Maoist China in last Century!!!

      • You think the people who are buying these apartments “worked hard for their money”? Seriously? Read some history books or news or research to find out who lives (or more likely doesn’t bother to live) in these buildings. Socialism or not – a depraved form of crony capitalism and trans-border money laundering is what’s enabling the vast majority of this wealth to accumulate. … and I’m sure there are some good people among them too *eyeroll*

  6. Folks, you need a course in Journalism 101. “Pulls Permits” strongly gives the impression that a restaurant was being planned in the building but the developer pulled the permits.

So this private “restaurant” will really just be a catering dining room with food brought over from his restaurant across the street.
That’s probably smart given it will be as empty as the tax shelter apartments above.

  8. I checked the NYCDOH website and there is one ungraded restaurant listed at 220 CPS. The Restaurant name is currently blank but the phone# is shown as 646-602-1270.

  9. I am very concerned that tenants may get tired of eating food from the same menu all the time…
