ArtBridge, Slate Property Group, and RiseBoro Community Partnership have introduced “Brownsville Reflections: Past, Present, Future,” a 600-foot-long public art installation at 326 Rockaway Avenue in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Part of the City Canvas pilot program, the exhibition showcases the talents of local artists Jocelyn Goode, Laurent Chevalier, and Sophia Victor on the construction barriers of an upcoming affordable housing project.
The housing development will operate entirely on electricity with a Passive House design and utilize solar power to reduce its carbon footprint. It aims to offer 215 affordable units with a significant portion for the formerly homeless.
Each artist contributing to the exhibition presents a narrative connected to Brownsville’s community fabric: Goode’s “The Return of the Horse Whisperers” offers a mythical depiction of feminine strength; Chevalier captures the essence of Brownsville’s residents through his photography; and Victor’s portraits on Chester Street illustrate New York City’s individuals.
The development will offer community-centric amenities such as multipurpose rooms, play areas, and outdoor spaces designed by the architectural firm OSD. Support services by RiseBoro Community Partnership include personalized case management, counseling, and community engagement support, alongside a range of educational and employment referrals.
This public art initiative enhances the visual landscape during the construction phase for 326 Rockaway, with completion and leasing for the property set for 2025.
