A proposal has been submitted to the Landmarks Preservation Commission for renovations to the B’ShERT synagogue at 83 Marlborough Road in Prospect Park South, Brooklyn. The proposal focuses on accessibility upgrades and building improvements while preserving the historic character of the structure. The existing building, a masonry synagogue with a prominent front portico, currently faces accessibility and circulation challenges. As shown in the existing condition images, access to the main entry and secondary entrances is limited, with narrow pathways and ramps that do not meet modern ADA standards. Additional issues include structural deterioration at the entry walkway and unclear wayfinding for visitors approaching the building.

The proposed design introduces a new accessible entry sequence along the side of the building, including a reconfigured ramp system and improved entry definition. Plans indicate the addition of a compliant ramp with integrated landings, updated railings, and a new canopy at the entrance. The renovation also includes interior accessibility upgrades such as elevator access to the lower-level social hall and improved access to the sanctuary’s bema. The project aims to enhance safety, address structural issues, and allow for more flexible use of the sanctuary while maintaining the building’s historic fabric.

Transit access to the site includes nearby subway service at the Beverley Road and Church Avenue stations, served by the B and Q trains, providing connections to other parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan.
