Construction is finished on 106 Avenue X, a three-story intermediate school annex in Gravesend, Brooklyn. Designed by the New York City School Construction Authority’s in-house team and built by Technico Construction Services, the structure spans approximately 75,000 square feet and yields 553 seats for students in sixth through eighth grade. The project also includes two science laboratories and a prep room, art and music classrooms, a gymatorium with locker rooms, a library, a full kitchen complex, and an outdoor playground.
The $77.71 million annex officially opened on Wednesday, joining nine other facilities debuting across the city for the 2026–27 school year. The ten buildings together add 4,656 seats citywide, and room-conversion projects at ten existing schools are adding another 384 seats as the city works to comply with the state class size law.

Beyond its 18 general education rooms and two special education rooms, with dedicated reading and speech resource rooms, the annex contains guidance and medical suites, an exercise room, student dining areas, and administrative and staff space. A site-specific artwork by artist Tura Oliveira occupies the lobby. The school will serve as a feeder to the adjacent John Dewey High School.
Ground broke on the annex in late May 2024, with construction proceeding on a two-year timeline entirely with union labor. At the time, officials cited chronic overcrowding in southern Brooklyn’s District 21, where a 391-seat addition at P.S. 253 and a 640-seat educational campus on 60th Street were also in the pipeline.
