Last year, there were two new permit filings for towers at addresses that don’t yet exist on the Greenpoint waterfront (37 and 41 Blue Slip). Both are part of the larger Greenpoint Landing development, which will encompass approximately 5,000 apartments. Initial plans have seen significant changes, and YIMBY now has the reveal for two of the towers.
The buildings have received a brick makeover, with the glassy and Miami-like aesthetic present in the old renderings completely absent from the new plan, though both versions were designed by Handel Architects.
37 Blue Slip will stand 30 stories tall and hold 372 units, while 41 Blue Slip will stand 39 floors with 401 apartments. Both towers will look fairly similar, though 37 Blue Slip will have an angular roof.
The towers appear to be a close match to some of the already-revealed low-rise buildings, including 21 Commercial Street. Besides the greater plan for Greenpoint Landing, plans are also underway for two CetraRuddy-designed towers at 77 Commercial Street just around the corner, and this slice of the waterfront is about to begin bustling with construction activity.
Progress along the rest of the waterfront has been enormous since Greenpoint Landing was first proposed. To the south, skyscrapers will soon begin rising as part of the Domino redevelopment by Two Trees. And to the north, TF Cornerstone’s East Coast Long Island City is now built-out, as is the first phase of Hunter’s Point South, by Related.
Eventually, a pedestrian causeway will likely link Greenpoint with Hunter’s Point South, and a soaring sculptural bridge was included in the old Handel plans for Greenpoint Landing.
No completion date for either building has been formally announced.
