Construction Update: 137 Franklin Street

Studio MDA‘s 137 Franklin Street is almost finished, but you would never guess that it’s actually a new building. The project’s red brick and steel facade is the perfect complement to its Tribeca location, blending seamlessly into the historic neighborhood.

137 Franklin is quite small, but that serves its purpose just fine; the building only contains three units, each a duplex. All three units will have approximately 3,000 square feet of space, though the ‘loft-like’ penthouse will be the largest (per Curbed).

Studio MDA’s work highlights the importance of context when it comes to architecture, which is something that several architects (ahemahem) in New York typically ignore. What 137 Franklin lacks in height or volume is made up for in the quality of the project’s design, which is top-notch. The building definitely serves as an example that other developers should strive to emulate.

  1. Really excellent project. It seems to fit perfectly in historical context without being a cheap kitsch revival style that seem to be all the rage in more banal cities or (god forbid) suburbs.

  2. Indeed. Some have commented that it’s poor mimicry on other sites–‘Disneyish,’ if you will–but I disagree.
