The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council recently debuted the first permanent arts and culture center on Governors Island. Known as the LMCC Arts Center at Governors Island, the new building spans 40,000 square feet and contains a range of facilities including artist studios and gallery spaces, a performance center, and the island’s first outdoor café.

The inaugural 2019 fall season includes two feature exhibitions, a rotating presentation of all-age programming, and more to be announced. “We are excited to expand LMCC’s decades-long work to connect artists and communities while reflecting on the world we inhabit,” said Lili Chopra, LMCC’s executive director of artistic programs. “The deep roots of LMCC’s presence in Manhattan’s arts and cultural landscape are now prominently visible through LMCC’s Arts Center at Governors Island for the whole community to enjoy.”

Located on the northern shore of the island, the building was originally constructed in the 1870s and functioned as an ordinance warehouse and military office space. Renovation of the building was designed in collaboration by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners and Adamson Associates Architects, which maintained and refurbished much of the historic brick, wood, and steel components of the building. The architects also sought to minimize the carbon footprint of the building by incorporating energy-efficient systems throughout the center.

Other primary consultants on the project included structural consultant BuroHappold Engineering and construction manager Reidy Contracting Group.

“We are honored to assist LMCC in the creation of their first permanent home on Governors Island,” said Pat Reidy, president of Reidy. “I look forward to seeing the center provide the New York community with space for the creation and sharing of art for generations to come in an exciting, dynamic location.”

  1. Thank you for your details, if I don’t have enough experience to understand the events, or stories around me that I can see. I probably got confused and conclude that you are insulting me: Hello New York YIMBY.
