Construction is progressing on the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School on Governors Island. Designed by Ciardullo Architecture & Engineering and developed under The School Construction Authority (SCA), the 110,000-square-foot facility will further the school’s mission to prepare young New Yorkers for green jobs and will double the campus from two to four buildings. The new structure will feature laboratories for maritime and environmental curriculum, as well as a gymnasium and a competition-sized pool.
The property is located between Center Way and Craig Road North, to the south of the existing New York Harbor School structures.
Construction broke ground in November 2024 and topped out last September. Crews are now in the process of installing the framework for the façade over a teal waterproof membrane. Most of the windows are already in place.
The structure is among the most prominent on the low-rise island, as seen in the following photo from Battery Park.
The renderings in the main photo and below show the majority of the façade composed of white paneling with a wavy geometry surrounding an irregular fenestration. The rear profile will feature earth-toned paneling and a two-tiered terrace with a canopy above the upper level. Mechanical equipment and HVAC infrastructure will sit atop the flat roof.
Interior renderings showcase the two-story indoor swimming pool facility and the lobby atrium.
In addition to the new facility, the school is also renovating the 88-year-old Building 555 on its existing campus. This annex will add 32,000 square feet of classrooms to support 480 new students, and is slated to open for the school year in September.
The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School is expected to cost $140 million with a completion date in March 2027, as noted on the info board.

Why are we building a school on Governors Island?
Great question. You would think a school promoting “Green Jobs” would be located within walking distance of students.
Not the most beautiful design, but the new development here is positive for the island. Ferries will always be needed here, but an aerial tram from Brooklyn would be a great way to encourage more tourists to the island and could be used by students.
Surround, (hide) with as many trees as possible..
