Construction has topped out on 36 West 38th Street, a 20-story hotel in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by Gene Kaufman and developed by Onboard Hospitality LLC, which purchased the property for $19 million in a bankruptcy auction from Gemini Real Estate in 2017, the structure stands 205 feet tall and will yield 200 guest rooms. Omnibuild Construction is the general contractor for the project, which is located on an interior lot between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, just south of Bryant Park.
The entire reinforced concrete superstructure was built since our last update in mid-May, when construction had just reached street level. Recent photographs show the floor plates, columns, and walls exposed and awaiting the installation of the glass curtain wall and exterior paneling.
The main rendering for 36 West 38th Street shows the façade composed of light gray metal paneling surrounding a glass curtain wall. A protruding column on the western half of the northern elevation is shown enclosed in what appears to be wooden panels framing a staggered window grid and topped with an overhanging cornice. Two upper setbacks lead to a flat parapet and a mechanical bulkhead lined with two diagonal rows of rectangular windows. A metal canopy hangs over the main entrance.
The development is located near a number of subway lines, including the B, D, F, M, and 7 trains at the 42nd Street-Bryant Park station on Sixth Avenue; the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, and Shuttle trains at the Times Square-42nd Street station on Seventh Avenue; and the A, C, and E trains at the 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal station on Eighth Avenue.
36 West 38th Street has an anticipated completion date for this summer posted on site.

Just wretched in every conceivable way.
“Au contraire.” I think the “Decrepit Style” suits the surrounding neighborhood buildings, although the original buildings still have some class as being, what I call, a “living museum” and representative of what once was the City at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
I thought the same thing. The neighborhood buildings are nothing to look at.
Gene Kaufman must be stopped
More than 100 DESIGN AWARDS 🤣
“GSKA has an international reputation for architectural excellence confirmed by more than 100 design awards including the industry’s highest honor: the AIA Firm Award.”
…thoughtless, uninspired boxes littering NYC!
Just terrible in so many ways. Bad job, Gene.
Who are these morons that keep hiring Gene Kaufman? This is steps away from Fifth Avenue and the site deserved something so much better.
It just wreaks of Gene Kaufman
Yet another “setback” for NY! 😔
Does anyone know why that bulkhead is so enormous?
And to think…. Mean Gene got a few kudos yesterday, but roundly panned today—that’s Gene—hit or miss!
The building has become a symbol of Midtown framed by the angle on work, that it’s a true piece of beautiful hotel views: Thanks.
