The Brigadier General Charles Young Playground in Harlem has completed a $11 million renovation project to convert a long-neglected dirt field into a 150,000-square-foot synthetic turf facility now known as the “Harlem Field of Dreams.” Announced in Mayor Eric Adams’ 2025 State of the City address, the project was developed through a public-private partnership and includes support from the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, the NYPD, the PitCCh In Foundation, and other local and national partners.
The new multi-sport field accommodates baseball, softball, soccer, football, and lacrosse. Upgrades include improved drainage, a synthetic turf surface, fencing, backstops, dugouts, benches, drinking fountains, and a sports mister. The project also complements previous park improvements made in 2023 and includes planned upgrades to the field house bathrooms with an additional $2.5 million in funding.
The initiative is part of the Adams administration’s broader public safety strategy focused on youth engagement. The field will host free youth athletic programming through the Department of Youth and Community Development’s “Saturday Night Lights” program, offering safe, supervised evening sports sessions in partnership with local law enforcement.
Brigadier General Charles Young Playground is located in North Central Harlem, near the 369th Regiment Armory. It is accessible via the 2, 3, B, and C trains, with stations at 135th Street and 145th Street providing convenient transit options.
