New permits have been filed for a seven-story academic building at 556 New Lots Avenue in East New York, Brooklyn. Located between Hendrix Street and Van Siclen Avenue, the lot is one block south of the Van Siclen Avenue subway station, served by the 2, 3, 4, and 5 trains. Soly Bawabeh of Midyan Gate Realty No. 4 LLC is listed as the owner behind the applications. Previous plans called for a mixed-use building with a charter school and commercial space.
The proposed 105-foot-tall development will yield 51,218 square feet for community facility space. The building will have classrooms, a gym and lecture hall on the first floor, and an auditorium and recreation space on the fifth floor. The steel-based structure will also have a cellar.
Jonathan Imani of IMC Architecture is listed as the architect of record.
Demolition permits were filed in July 2023. An estimated completion date has not been announced.

So this hopefully won’t be a charter school?
Key reasons for the controversy surrounding charter schools include: People often oppose charter schools because they divert public funding away from traditional school districts, reducing resources for the majority of students. Critics also cite a lack of transparent oversight, unelected boards, and lower unionization rates for teachers, which can lead to unequal student access and labor issues.
