The City has unveiled plans to improve the traffic and pedestrian flow through Grand Army Plaza in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Unveiled by Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn, the proposal will revise the traffic-heavy circle at Prospect Park’s northern entrance as a larger public space with safer pedestrian and bicycle connections between the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch and the park. According to the city, the plan also aims to simplify movement through the plaza and improve bus operations along the B41 and B6 corridors, which together carry tens of thousands of daily riders.
The redesign follows earlier outreach in 2024, when more than 85 percent of roughly 3,600 survey respondents backed a concept that would better connect the plaza, the memorial arch, Bailey Fountain, and Prospect Park. NYC DOT said it will use a new round of public engagement to finalize the capital project scope, after which the agency will study reconstruction options that could add substantial new pedestrian and cycling amenities.
Public workshops on the proposal are scheduled to begin on April 23, 2026, with additional in-person sessions on April 25 and a virtual workshop on April 29. The city has said project information and a public survey will be posted online on the day the workshops begin, with feedback accepted through May 31.
Grand Army Plaza is served most directly by the 2 and 3 trains at the Grand Army Plaza station, as well as the B and Q trains at the 7th Avenue station.

Excellent, common-sense solution that will instantly make the area more walkable and attractive. Can’t happen soon enough.
You do realize that this is the main car artery for all of this area of Brooklyn, right? It’s already a parking lot much of the day given all the traffic, this will make it 100x worse – which impacts things kind air quality, noise pollution etc. There are more uses here than just pedestrians and bikes.
Traffic will flow through here much faster with fewer intersections and points of conflict.
How does this possibly make it 100x worse? Be specific. Seriously
Traffic is already so bad around Grand Army Plaza that making it incrementally worse will be just that. The benefits to the urban landscape and for pedestrians and cyclists would outweigh, at least in my opinion, the inconvenience to drivers. Perhaps there is a way to multi-purpose the existing traffic pattern so that a rush-hours traffic can proceed as is but at other times and on weekends the street is given over to pedestrians. Some smart traffic planner could probably workout a nice design in this regard. There will probably have to be emergency vehicle access in any event.
B6 does not operate in this area. B69 is the other bus that also utilizes Grand Army Plaza.
This makes sense. NY doesn’t seem to embrace the roundabout besides Columbus Circle. I wonder if the intersection just north of Bailey Fountain was considered for a roundabout instead of a stoplight intersection.
NYC did not have a permanent traffic light until 1920. If you look at old videos of NY, traffic moved through intersections constantly without stop and go. People crossed the streets at any place as well. This led to many accidents.
Is the city planning on implementing this as a full reconstruction, or will it initially be paint and blocks and planters?
thats what i want to know. i didnt find anything about that yet.
Always thought Grand Army Plaza was in Prospect Heights.
