Plans have been announced for the redesign Linden Boulevard between Fountain Avenue and Conduit Avenue in East New York, Brooklyn. Announced by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn, the project will bring new bus lanes and safety upgrades along one of the borough’s most dangerous corridors. NYC DOT said the project is intended to speed up service and improve reliability for 60,000 daily riders while reconnecting neighborhoods that have long been divided by the wide roadway.

Beginning in late 2026, the city plans to install eight new bus boarding islands, which will also function as pedestrian refuge islands, and add new signalized intersections at Pine Street and Emerald Street. The agency will also close or redesign five slip lanes to shorten crossings, improve bus operations, and reduce conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians. NYC DOT expects the work to be completed in 2027.

The project will serve riders on the B13, B14, B15, B20, BM5, and Q8 routes and is aimed at improving access to jobs, healthcare, shopping, and other destinations including JFK Airport, Brookdale Hospital, and Gateway Center. According to the city, 54 percent of residents along the corridor commute by public transportation and 57 percent of households do not have access to a private vehicle. Between 2021 and 2025, the corridor recorded 443 traffic injuries, including 15 severe injuries and one fatality.

The redesign is also intended to improve connections to the nearby A, C, J, Z, L, and 3 subway trains, though the nearest station is more than a half-mile away. The proposal aligns with the city’s Jewel Streets Neighborhood Plan and complements ongoing work to reimagine the nearby Conduit corridor.

Several times, I have encountered drivers looking for Linden Blvd., having exited the Whitestone Expressway at Linden Place in Flushing.
