RFEI Released For Historic Buildings 324 And 330 On Governors Island, Manhattan

The Trust for Governors Island has released a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) for the revitalization of Buildings 324 and 330, two vacant historic structures on Governors Island, Manhattan. Building 324, the former Fort Jay YMCA, is a two-story Neo-Georgian structure designed by May & Hillard and completed in 1926, spanning 26,000 square feet. Building 330, the former Fort Jay Theatre, is a single-story venue completed in 1937 under the supervision of the Army Motion Picture Service, spanning approximately 10,000 square feet. The Trust is seeking proposals for arts and cultural, recreational, and other public-facing uses that would return both buildings to active, year-round use.

Urban Assembly New York Harbor School Progresses on Governors Island

Construction progresses on the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School on Governors Island. Designed by Ciardullo Architecture & Engineering and developed under The School Construction Authority (SCA), the 110,000-square foot project is situated on a former patch of empty grass bounded by Craig Road North to the west, Division Road and the original New York Harbor School structures to the immediate north, Center Way to the east, and the Collective Retreats camping grounds to the south.

LPC To Review Renovation Proposal For 309 Clayton Road On Governors Island

The Trust for Governors Island has proposed the renovation of Building 309 at 309 Clayton Road on Governors Island, to expand its functionality as a public events and community programming space. The proposal, set for review by the Landmarks Preservation Commission on January 27, was assembled by Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects. Although situated within the Governors Island Historic District, Building 309 is classified as a non-contributing structure and has no architectural elements deemed necessary for preservation.

LPC To Review Buttermilk Labs Proposal for Building 301 On Governors Island

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) is set to review a proposal for the redevelopment of Building 301, located at 301 Comfort Road on Governors Island. The project, named Buttermilk Labs, aims to transform the currently vacant structure into a 23,000-square-foot hub dedicated to climate-focused businesses and non-profits. Plans assembled by AYON Studio include office spaces, research areas, classrooms, and public convening spaces, along with workforce training programs designed to create job opportunities in underserved communities.

Updated Renderings Showcase SOM’s $700 Million New York Climate Exchange on Governors Island

Updated renderings have been revealed for the New York Climate Exchange, an environmental research facility and climate solutions center planned for Governors Island in New York Harbor. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in collaboration with MNLA, Buro Happold, and Langan Engineering, the $700 million project will consist of a 400,000-square-foot research and education hub anchored by Stony Brook University. The complex’s two all-electric buildings will be connected by a distinctive photovoltaic canopy and will use sustainable mass timber as their primary structural material. The development site is generally bound by Craig Road South along the waterfront, the Oval green lawn and West Way to the west, and several historical landmark buildings to the north above Division Road.

LPC Reviews Proposal for Renovations to QC NY Spa Buildings on Governors Island

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission is reviewing a proposal to renovate two buildings on Governors Island. Designed by Robert D. Henry Architects, the project involves the construction of new ADA entryways and poolside lighting fixtures for the property, which is operated by QC NY Spa. The structures, referred to in the proposal as Buildings 111 and 114, are located at 111 Andes Road and 114 Governors Island, adjacent to Soissons Landing and the ferry to Manhattan.

Stony Brook University and SOM Selected to Complete $700M Climate Research Campus on Governors Island

A project team led by Stony Brook University and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill has been selected to complete a $700 million climate research and education campus on Governors Island. Stony Brook University will anchor the 400,000-square-foot campus, known formally as The Center for Climate Solutions. The education and research hub will debut as New York Climate Exchange.

Finalists Announced for Governors Island’s Center for Climate Solutions Design Competition

The Trust for Governors Island has revealed four universities and design teams that will move forward in a design competition to construct and operate a new climate research and educational complex on the southern tip of the island. The complex will debut as the Center for Climate Solutions and will support the research, development, and demonstration of equitable climate solutions for New York City that can be scaled and applied globally.

The Trust for Governors Island Awarded Urban and Community Forestry Grant by the State of New York

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has awarded an Urban Forestry Grant to The Trust for Governors Island that will be used to effectively manage the island’s historic trees and new plantings. This includes the completion of an island-wide tree inventory and the installation of a community forest management plan led by a dedicated arborist.

Renderings Revealed for Climate Research and Educational Complex on Governors Island

The Trust for Governors Island recently unveiled plans to develop a 33-acre climate solutions education and research center near the southern tip of Governors Island. The organization worked in collaboration with WXY Architecture + Design to develop the masterplan and rezoning proposals needed to kick off the project.
