Permits have been filed for a new five-story public school at 1-55 54th Avenue in Long Island City, Queens. The site is two blocks away from Hunter’s Point South Park, a comfortable public waterfront space overlooking the East River and Midtown skyline. The project will be part of the revitalization of the southern tip of the borough’s East River waterfront area.
As increasing land value has pushed up demand for new development, the neighborhood is quickly being cleared of now-obsolete warehouses, with expectations for major imminent residential growth. The Hunters Point South ferry station is just three blocks away, and the nearest subway station at Vernon Boulevard, serviced by the 7 train, is located seven blocks away. The NYC School Construction Authority will be responsible for the development.
The 64-foot tall structure will yield 82,130 square feet, with 75,740 square feet dedicated to community facility use. The structure will include classrooms, medical suites, record rooms, a cafeteria, bicycle storage space, and audio-visual workspace, and a gymnasium on the third floor with capacity for nearly 400 persons
This inclusion to the neighborhood marks a concerted effort by the city government to stabilize a growing area, making its future prominence more sustainable by investing in the education of the next generation.
Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum P.C. will be responsible for the design.
Demolition permits have not been filed. The estimated completion date has not been announced.
