One of the city’s largest-ever public murals will soon adorn The Rollins, one of nine buildings at the Essex Crossing mega-project on the Lower East Side. Brooklyn art duo ASVP was commissioned for the project following a borough-wide call for submissions from Delancey Street Associates, the development team responsible for Essex Crossing.
Located at 145 Clinton Street, The Rollins is a new 16-story development that contains a mix of market-rate and affordable rentals, the largest Trader Joe’s on the East Coast, a Target shopping center, and an outdoor public plaza. The mural will span the building’s western façade, covering the entire podium up through the eighth floor in an L-shaped orientation.
Described as “pop-abstract” graffiti, ASVP’s submission stood out from more than 85 responses from around the world. Installation will begin in the coming weeks and be completed this fall.
“We are thrilled to work with ASVP on bringing their vibrant design to The Rollins and Essex Crossing,” said Ernie Padron, development associate at BFC Partners. “At nearly 11,000 square feet, the mural will be one of the largest in the city and offer visitors and residents a colorful look at the Lower East Side’s famed artistic culture.”
BFC Partners is part of Delancey Street Associates, which also includes L+M Development Partners, Taconic Investment Partners, The Prusik Group, and the Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group. The overall Essex Crossing development includes The Essex at 125 Essex Street, the historic Essex Street Market, a condo building at 242 Broome Street, senior housing at 140 Essex Street, and the Frances Goldin Senior Apartments, in addition to Class A office space at 180 and 202 Broome Street.
Additional public and recreational areas include a 14-screen Regal cinema, a bowling center, an indoor park, and a bazaar-inspired marketplace.
According the developers, 90 percent of Essex Crossing will be open by 2021. The entire project is expected to be finished by 2024.
